Tromsø is known worldwide for its ability to raise new electronic music. The Insomnia festival pursues this energy.

Situated by the arctic gateway, Tromsø was early to adapt the Paris fashion, and is from the 1900-th Century known as the Paris of the north. At the early stage of the house- and techno genre in the 80's, Tromsø was the leading town in Norway. The artists from Tromsø  have always found inspiration from house- and techno musicians around the world.

Electronic music was at first considered a non-existing music genre. Some people still have difficulties relating electronic music to live music. For the festival, it's a creative and a different way of expressing ourselves. Within electronic music, there are no limits of being creative. Thus, we can easily relate the music to our own reality. Electronic music can be as varied as the different lives we live. No other music genre contains so many different ways of expression. Electronic music is performed by everybody; from almost inaccessible visionaries  to artists who want to reach a broader audience. Despite their extraordinary range in musical expression, they have all one thing in common; innovation.

Insomnia is a festival presenting music created with electronical devices. The aim is to give the audience an experience of the wide range of the electronical music genre. So far, there has only been norwegian artists represented. Insomnia 2006, however, will be the first festival which also includes artists from USA, England, Finland and Sweden. Our idea is to continue the legacy of the town and develop it by introducing new and exciting technological expressions. As before, we also have seminars related to technological expressions. Themes this year are graphic design, intellectual rights and architecture. Our ambition is to present a broader and more varied image of electronic music.
