CITY OF NEWSPAPER CHRONICLES
Book 1 produced at the start of the Year of Urban Development gathered 25
writers who discussed the future of the city. In the wake of this initiative, every Saturday for a whole year, ”a universe of supporting players” discussed issues concerning the future Tromsø in the debate columns of the largest Tromsø newspaper. The feature article entitled ”Why have I returned to Tromsø, and why I will leave again?” initiated the debate about the Academy of the Arts – which is to open in 2007.
The chronicle entitled ”Culture and non-culture in the seafood town of Tromsø” triggered a broad initiative to establish a ”Centre for Fish and Seafood” in the inner harbor of the city to develop Tromsø's position as a site of international importance within a wider fisheries perspective.
This re-established public sphere reveals that the foci of competency are able to
harvest perspectives of urban planning from an understanding of the future, while releasing projects of vital importance to the community.
